For many young Australians, gambling is no longer something they first encounter as adults. Betting odds, advertising, sporting sponsorships, apps and conversations about multis and tipping can make gambling feel like a completely normal part of sport and everyday life.
I understand how innocent that first experience can feel. I was 16 when I started.
When I speak to young people, I'm not there to frighten them and I'm certainly not there to lecture them. I'm there to tell them what I wish somebody had told me. I share an age-appropriate version of my story and explain how gambling gradually changed my behaviour, my decisions and eventually my life. Students are encouraged to ask questions and have a genuine conversation.
